Considering Usefulness Of Proofreading Written Items

By Tom Addison

Proofreading is an often overlooked step in the writing process. Many people will want to consider their work finished and walk away from a written assignment. However, whether you are in grade school, high school, college or the work force, it is still a necessary and often beneficial habit to get into.

Typically you will want to do it at least once, but do not let that stop you from doing it twice. Nobody is perfect, and so mistakes may go overlooked once or even twice sometimes. This can often be the case if you are tired or distracted from the work as you are doing it.

Having a quiet work space when you are proofing is just as necessary as when you are writing or otherwise wanting to be able to focus. Losing your train of thought can mean mistakes both made and missed. In order to avoid having to deal with redoing any work, you should review in areas where you are unlikely to be distracted or interrupted.

Reviewing your work and righting mistakes can be especially necessary if you are working or attending a university or college. Naturally it is thought that you are capable of writing fairly well at this stage, and so any errors you make can stand out a bit more. Check especially for grammar and spelling even on something like a company memo, and you can stand out with time and experience.

A quick tip that might also help you out; once you have finished your own proof, see if you are able to get another set of eyes as well. Having someone else check over your writing as well can make for a reliable outside source of information. He or she will typically have no bias one way or another, and therefor be able to simply check the work without skewing anything.

Hopefully proofreading seems like a more relevant and useful practice for improving your writing now. If you feel like you want more information on how to make it a good habit, check around online for articles or other tip sources. Good luck with your writing and keep working to make it better.
