Some Basic Info Regarding Different Types Of Headaches

By Don Stanford

As an extremely common and troubling problem, headaches have the potential to become a very overwhelming issue for some people. Although most people acquire them occasionally and suffer only mild pain, they can be a frequent and overwhelming issue for some people.

It is not uncommon for people to assume that these problems are caused by one source. The fact is that, although symptoms may be similar, there are numerous kinds of pain that cannot occur in the head, each with different causes. At the end of the day, the medical community knows very little about this problem, making treatment very difficult.

Tension headaches are considered the most common type. Although an exact cause of this problem has not been clearly identified, many feel that it is related to stress and muscle tension. They occur in people of all ages, both male and female. Generally, they last only a brief time, perhaps thirty minutes or so. They can, however, last for several days, resulting in mild or moderate levels of pain.

A bit mysterious, migraines are a common problem. Although the exact cause of migraines are unknown, they are thought to be related to blood vessel contractions or other changes in the brain. The pain associated with this type is typically moderate, but can become very severe, resulting in an intense throbbing or pounding pain. They can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. There are a variety of symptoms associated with this problem, including sensitivity to light and noise, nausea and vomiting, a loss of appetite or stomach pain.

Many types of head pain are caused by infections of the sinuses that create pressure in the nasal cavity, forehead, and cheekbones. Typically called a sinus headache, this type of pain is usually mild and will subside as the sinus infection recedes. The sufferer may also experience facial swelling, a fever, a feeling of pressure in the ears, and nasal discharge.

A rarer, but much more powerful problem is known as cluster headaches. Once again, the medical community knows very little about the source of the problem, but there is no mistaking the symptoms for sufferers. An extreme sensation of burning or piercing pain is usually felt, most typically found around or behind the eyes. Occurrences are sporadic, as they happen very suddenly. This problem can last anywhere from weeks to months, making the problem potentially debilitating and requiring medical attention.

Understanding the type of pain you are suffering with is the first step in discovering an appropriate treatment. It should be pointed out, however, that if your symptoms occur often, and are very severe, you should speak with a doctor. It could be a sign of a more serious problem. Over the counter medications, coupled with quiet rest, is usually sufficient in relieving pain. For more serious cases, prescription medications or injections might be necessary. For problems related to sinuses, antihistamines and decongestants can be helpful.

It is very unfortunate that more is not known about headaches. Generally, a cause is very difficult, and even impossible, to identify. For this reason effective treatment options are limited. This is very troubling for those who experience intense pain which can be very problematic for one's daily life. Remember to speak with a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms that transcend typical pain.
