Guide to Finding your Subject for your Essay

By Jeff Tormey

Finding your subject would be particularly difficult particularly if you have got the full world as the source of your topic. But like every other problem, essay writing also follows a few steps. These steps would include deciding the topic that you need to write, preparing the outline to summarise your ideas, writing your thesis statement, writing the body of your essay, writing the primary points, writing the sub-points, complicating those sub-points, writing your introduction, writing your conclusion, and then your finishing touches.

If you're making your essay from scratch then it might be tedious to think of a certain subject that may actually hit your audience. You will be confused on what subject to select from since the whole world would appear to present itself before you. Although this first task you have would be more menacing, this would also make you more interested in writing your essay.

Hence the very first thing you should do is define your purpose. Think about the purpose why it is that you are writing your essay. Is the purpose to persuade the readers to believe what you suspect, do you want to elucidate something, or do want to teach your readers of something? No matter what your topic is, it must fit to that purpose.

Next is to give idea to subjects that interest you. If you have decided on the point of your essay then note down the subjects that are related to your purpose. Whatever purpose you've got for your essay, the quantity of subjects that you can think about is never-ending. That subject should touch you. You can regard about your life, your past-times, or things that occupies the majority of your time. Don't let that subject slip away, get it down on a paper.

Then, you can evaluate about each potential topic that you have written down. Study each subject that you noted and think about how you are feeling about this subject matter. If your purpose is to teach, then you need to be well-inform on the subject that you need to teach. If your purpose is to encourage, then you need to be at least keen on that subject. In choosing which subject will be suitable for you to scribble then you must consider the number of ideas that you can think about that topic.

Before you will make a choice on the subject you are going to scribble, think about your readers. Should your essay be for general review, or are they written for precise analysis of something? If you know the reviewer of your essay then you will be ready to move to the following step of essay writing. Just make sure that your topic is specific to your aim.
