Learning To Control Yourself Better

By Will Schlepinger

Self discipline is basically the exercise of controlling one's actions. He has the ability to follow the dictates of the logical mind and desist from doing things that he likes that are detrimental to his person and interest. Being able to exercise control is but one aspect of self discipline, because the habit must be ingrained in your personality so that self control becomes an automatic reaction in given circumstances. Discipline may appear to be a problem of willpower. The downside is that one may be able to impose his will but at the expense of not being able to feel good about it. It's a good recipe for stress and disappointment, but there are better ways to a disciplined life.

Developing Self Discipline

Have you ever stayed up all night talking about something interesting? This is an example of the mind exercising control over the body. What it proved is that the need to sleep can be subordinated and dictated to by the mind in a contrived situation where the person is happy with what he is doing at the moment. That gives us a key to self discipline.

It would appear that you get keyed up if you are pleased with your activity. Your mood swings are a factor therefore in your ability to stay in control because if you feel low you lose the will, so you need to keep up your spirit by looking at the positive aspects of your activity. Some things bore you and some keep you alert and active, so list down the latter and keep going back at it when you seems to be losing control of yourself.

Make things easier on yourself. So, doing your income tax return is a bore or causes you a headache, what you do is give yourself a break. Forget it for a while and go outside for a stroll. When you pick it up again, focus on one or two items only at a time. Change your approach if you cannot do all things at the same time, maybe a little at a time will be more to your liking. It's all in the mind actually so if your mind gets used to that process, everything will be going nice and easy.

Self Discipline And Self Awareness

So the cake is there for the taking. Sometimes it's hard to resist temptation, right? Willpower is a nice idea, but here is a simpler solution: stop standing in front of the cake! It is an easy lesson to understand, so train yourself to apply it habitually. If you are a teetotaler, there is no sense in having beer in the fridge. Don't go near a bar if you have no intention of getting picked up. Keep clear of people who are apt to be bad influence.

A person who occasionally succumbs to temptation is not necessarily bereft of self discipline. Go ahead and develop the willpower to say no, if you can, but why not also have the wisdom to avoid temptation? People have their weak points or weak moments that they should be aware and wary of. Does this make more sense than fighting useless battles with yourself?

It is futile to fight your natural instinct. You will get better results by knowing yourself. What keeps you going and focused? Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Find your strengths and develop the ability to exploit it, and recognize your limitations. That's how you keep in total control.
