Are you a success? What's a good life? If you're making money doing something you enjoy, are you less successful than someone who happens to make more money? Definitely not. You are living your life to you own satisfaction, and not to keep up with the Joneses. Two businessmen can be compared for their success in business, but this doesn't tell us about their entire lives, does it?
Assuming that in the future you will find yourself in a better state of life, would it be right to say that only then have you attained success? That would be wrong. The basis for success is the kind of life you are having and not in terms of achievements. A poor but happy person going to school to get a degree, or otherwise bettering his life, is more successful than a miserable rich man who is falling into destructive habits.
Your Success is in the Present.
Your personal success is in the actions of this moment. It might not be easy to understand but it is completely logical. Even if you lost the game but played fair and square, you can learn from your mistakes and claim moral victory because the end does not justify the means.
The idea may be annoying for some. For some the thought of success being somewhere in the future is just a way to excuse the actions of the moment. They can continue "waiting for their ship to come in," and delay taking the actions they need to take to fulfill themselves. It is again the bad habit of waiting for tomorrow what you can do for today. It is not that these people do not want success and a better life; it is just that they do not want to assume any obligation and would rather leave everything to chance.
On the opposite side of the fence, there are individuals who actually find the challenge exhilarating. Why wait for later if you can do it now? Find your inspiration in the work of the moment, do it honestly and with acceptance of the need to continually correct course and enjoy the journey, and you are successful right now. Somewhere along the way you may hesitate and falter, but provided you can find your way back on the right tract every time, you are in a sense having a fruitful and rewarding life.
Success is a Matter of Opinion What life would you want to live? To become wealthy? A shoulder to cry on? Have great relationships? See the world? Physical well-being? A combination of those things? Success is what you perceive it to be. Whatever your best course is in life is (and this is only for you to decide), when you start honestly in that direction, in that exact moment you are succeeding as a human being.
To say that money is the root of all evil is an overstatement. In life, you are bound to gain some and to lose some. That is the facts of life. The important question is the moment-to-moment and day-to-day question: will you start again in the right direction? That you acted when expected to and choose your own way to destiny defines your degree of success.
