Serge Lutens started his career when he became an assistant in a hair salon when he was fourteen years old. He was a well-known photographer, fashion designer, filmmaker, a hair stylist and a perfume art director. When he was younger, he experimented different make-up techniques and made his friends his first models.
His first major job was in Vogue magazine handling the hair, make-up and jewelry section in 1963. He worked with two models for their Christmas edition. SL spent the entire night just putting the pearls on the models. It was always elegant and classy as said by one of those who interviewed him.
SL was offered a job by Dior. He created a new make-up line and their image ad in 1968. Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Bob Richardson are some of the famous photographers that SL worked with. He also made two short films called Le Stars and Suaire seen in a Film Festival.
Shiseido hired him as their international creative director in 1980. Since then, he made several campaign ads, films and designed make-up and packaging. His works have won many awards including two Lions dOr at the international advertising festival. During 1982, Shiseido asked him to make a perfume called Nombre Noir.
SL made his own brand of perfumes called Parfums-Beaute Serge Lutens. He said that Morocco was a big part of his creations and this is the place where it all began. Without Morocco, his ideas of perfumes would not exist.
Serge Lutens also told someone, and as quoted, the perfume of a person is their own reflection even though they use many fragrances. An elegant fragrance if used by an elegant person would make them more luxurious. In 2006 he was awarded a Talent dOr award by Sommet du Luxe and as of today, SL was living in Morocco.
