The Importance of Educating Children to Care for the Environment

By Hugh Jones

Until a few decades back, very few people understood that defending the world's environment would be jointly beneficial for all of humanity. That is not to say that there wasn't clear proof to demonstrate the significance of protecting the environment, but the masses had still not started to understand the magnitude of the situation.

As more scientific proof started being publicized, about things like the ozone layer, global warming, and the effects of pollution and insecticides, people began to get it. But for the average CEOs in major companies, that data was not enough to change company policies. And the major polluters of the planet, the industries, continued to expel massive amounts of damaging pollution into our valuable ecosystems.

Businesses were not about to start infringing on their profit margins just in order to please some scientists with their hypotheses, and enterprises weren't the only ones that were slow in improving their policies.

Governments were reluctant to start talking about new policies that would infringe on the growth of industry.

No-one wished to be first to wave the banner of eco-friendliness simply because that wouldn't have done them any good at the time. At the time, there was very little market for eco friendly products; at the time there had been very little regulation. The tragedy of the commons had gotten out of control.

Through education things began changing. Youth started asking their parents how they could help to save the environment, and adults, who never would have cared otherwise, started listening.

The results are astonishing. Today there is legislation that limits the amount of worldwide pollution levels, and although tons more should be done, we ought to be encouraged by the of achievement which has come about due to environmental education.

By continuing to enhance and increase environmental education among the youth of the planet, more positive outcomes are certain to result.
