Why Don't You Consider Organising A Cheese, Wine And Handmade Earrings Party?

By Adrian Jones

Handmade Earrings Go Along With Wine and Cheese on Orkney!

There is a shop in the middle of Kirkwall, on the very small island of Orkney, that exhibits incredible ranges of jewellery. From a Celtic pendant to handmade earrings you will discover something for everybody. This is the only retail outlet which sells this array of locally-made fine jewellery.

However this Alladin's Cave features far more than handmade earrings and jewellery for each and every occasion. Designer clothes and accessories from some of Orkney's top manufacturers and craftspeople are displayed there. After making your jewellery selections you may look through gifts, clothes, paintings, pottery and plenty of other Orkney classics.

The first jewellery pieces were available in this shop back in the 1960s, it was then owned by the present jewellery designer's folks. She had just graduated from Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and had to have an outlet for her landmark heritage jewelry. So she launched her jewellery business from a corner shop, rather an non-traditional idea! Nonetheless her reputation grew, and over recent years she has grown to be known right across the UK, far from this little isle.

The first shop on this site was called Kirkness and Gorie and was launched in 1859 by her great-great grandfather. It started out as a family grocer and later became a wine merchant offering continental produce. This service to tourists and the local people of Orkney has been extended throughout the years and now you can find another shop, entered via a connecting courtyard, which sells wine and wool. Here another member of the family takes care of business and also runs Orkney's only wine festival each and every year. This started as a bit of an experiment, but has developed to be an keenly anticipated event.

Handmade Earrings Are Simply The Tip Of The Iceberg

However, this week gourmet cheese has been added onto the range of treats to choose from, to the delight of connoisseurs across Orkney. He is following the trend set by the initial Victorian owners in importing only the finest wine and food.

So there have been parties this week with corks popping and beaming faces saying "cheese". Among the choice of cheeses on offer were hand made classics from Scotland, England, Wales, Spain, Italy and France. You will discover fine farmhouse cheeses produced in Orkney too which are sold throughout the country.

So now Broad Street in Kirkwall features a one-stop shop for designer clothing, gifts, textiles, accessories, cheese, wine, wool - together with handmade earrings and Celtic pendant styles that echo the Norse heritage of this northerly isle.
