Auctions Of Abandoned Self Storage Units

By Adriana Noton

Self storage companies offer people a place to keep their belongings. Whether it is short term or for a longer period of time, they are a great option for people that have things they cannot keep with them or do not have room for. They are found almost everywhere, and are useful for storing almost anything.

When payment has not been made for a predetermined period of time to a company offering this type of service, these abandoned units can be sold or auctioned to the public. Auctions of this type have become increasingly popular, and are even featured on television. As the demand for auctions of this type has continued to increase, so has the number of storage companies offering it for units that have been abandoned or are unpaid.

People attending one of these auctions do not know what the locker holds. While there may be a general listing of the type of contents, only the highest bidder will be able to explore the entire contents. When the locker is sold, the buyer assumes responsibility for the locker, and must empty it of all contents.

There are many different sizes of storage units. Some are small and hold a few items. Others are quite large and can hold the contents of an entire home. Larger lockers that have many items inside are generally more popular at auction and usually garner a higher price.

The lock is removed just before bids are accepted. Those who may be interested in bidding are allowed to look at the contents. Many times, the contents cannot be touched, and any closed containers are not allowed to be opened. Buyers must remain outside the locker and are given a time limit to observe the contents before the auction begins. The person who bids the highest is who will get possession of the contents of the locker.

After the auction is complete, most establishments will require that the buyers empty the contents within a certain time limit. All items must be removed, even if they are something the buyer does not want. Even refuse must be dealt with, and storage companies do not generally allow their garbage containers to be used for this, so arrangements must be made to ensure things are disposed of properly.

Personal effects, such as papers, should be left behind. This is a general practice of these types of auctions, requiring that identifying paperwork which can consist of mail, identification, paperwork or other things of this type remain property of the storage company. If they are found following the auction, for example, if all items are are taken to another location to be sorted, they should be returned as soon as possible.

Whether there are items of value found or not, these auctions can be an exciting experience. Some buyers are able to make money with these type of auctions by selling the effects to others through thrift shops. Rare and valuable items can be found, but there is never a guarantee of the contents. This may be why it is so popular, as there is always a chance of finding something that is worth a lot of money.
