Become a Motivational Speaker with a Good Foundation

By Julissa Ugarte

No matter how much success any of us ever attain in life, none of us can honestly say we made it completely on our own. Everyone will face some conflict and struggle in our lives, and in these times often need some kind of assistance from someone else. Things do not necessarily need to be going bad to get help, since sometimes a good word of advice can take great success to even greater success. Whether it is to help remove a negativity or reinforce a positivity, these are the types of situations that motivational speakers are trained to address.

As people find themselves in increasingly stressful situations, whether at work or at home, motivational speakers are being sought after more and more to provide the support service that people are searching for. Through various life experiences, motivational speakers have learned some skills or gained some wisdom that others may find valuable in their own paths toward more successful lives. Maybe you have had some experiences yourself which you feel could enrich other people's lives. If this is something you have thought about pursuing, you should know a few things first.

Being a good motivational speaker requires more than just having a good story to tell; you must be able to actually share that story with others in a clear and engaging manner. All of those tips and strategies from speech class come to play, like proper enunciation and pronunciation, staying away from nonsense fillers like Ah's and Um's, and avoiding hesitations and lengthy pauses. Taking the time to practice your speeches with focus is really the only way to become comfortable with speaking in public, let alone be a great motivational speaker.

Setting up an efficient and effective practice routine is essential when developing your plan to becoming a motivational speaker. Besides isolated practicing, asking some friends or family members to be an audience for you will help give you confidence as you lead up to larger audiences full of strangers. Your skills will become more polished, and you will become more confident, the more practice time you invest, especially when practicing before increasingly larger audiences.

While it is pointless to have an inspiring story or message and not be able to communicate it effectively, neither is there a point in being able to speak very well without having an interesting and valuable message to share. Because the purpose is to hear some sort of uplifting message that could be of some value, most people would much rather listen to a great story from an average motivational speaker than an uninspiring story from a great orator. Be mindful that your audience will likely be able to tell if you are lying about your experiences or not, so make certain you share your actual thoughts and feelings about actual situations.

They say that everyone is a teacher. Yet, without effective communication, someone, maybe even many, will be left suffering, yearning for just that one word to bring them light. After investing the time and energy into becoming a quality motivational speaker, you will be soon on your way to improving the lives and world around you.
