How You Can Better Manage Your Stress

By Ayesha Miramontes

Nobody is immune from stress, though it is important not to let it control the way you live. When you become too stressed, it's important to take corrective action right away, as living with excessive stress for too long can have very real health effects. The following tips will prevent stress from taking over your life. Socialize with your family and friends if you start feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Surrounding yourself with the people you love can bring happiness to your life and reduce anxiety. Look for lighthearted group activities that are sure to invite laughter like a nice dinner at your favorite restaurant, shooting a game of pool, or going to see your favorite genre of movies.

Stay active and get enough exercise to beat stress. While exercise is not a miracle cure, incorporating regular workouts into your lifestyle can make your life better. Stress can be lowered with this approach, and it also has the benefit of raising self confidence and feeling of control. A lot of people have issues that they create that they didn't need. Making wrong decisions normally stems from not taking responsibility of situations that may arise. A lot of people will put themselves in an unnecessarily difficult situation. Instead, you should concentrate on improving situations quickly so you won't create as much stress. Stress can cause some people to cope in a negative way such as alcohol and drugs. These methods only provide temporary relief for those that use them. Taking drugs or drinking alcohol will not fix your problems. In fact, these substances will only make your life more complicated and stressful in the long run.

Make sure your jaw is relaxed and do not grit your teeth. There are different parts of the body that may begin to harbor tension when a person is stressed out, and the jaw is one of the most common. It's helpful to use your index finger to touch your jaw, clench it, take a deep breath, and then release your jaw as you exhale. You should feel an immediate release of tension. While many people find video games and similar hobbies relaxing, if you start to get overly frustrated while doing them, you should put them away for a while. Keep in mind that the purpose of these things is to relax you. It's not to replace your stress with more stress. It is important to be able to say no. You will have an unduly stressful life if you always say "yes." Be aware of your own limitations, and never agree to take on added responsibility if you are not prepared to deal with it. Remember, you have to do what feels good to you. That's the important thing.

Sometimes it helps to get your thoughts out in the open when you're trying to relieve stress, so write them down. Sitting down and writing all about your problems can lift a stressful weight from your shoulders. It's particularly effective with those sorts of stresses that you feel uncomfortable sharing with other people. Keep a journal containing the things that stressed you out, and how you solved them or relieved your stress, that way you can refer back to it. Meditation is a wonderful way to relax you muscles and clear you mind. Meditation works by relaxing your mind and body, thus reducing your stress. Meditation can be very simple; just listening to relaxing music by yourself in a quiet location for a short time counts.

One of the best ways to get rid of stress is regular exercise. You can do this easily by power-walking or jogging. Your body releases endorphins when you exercise. Endorphins increase feelings of well being and leave you feeling more relaxed. Sweating will also help you get rid of toxins that could be one of the many causes of the stress that you feel. Now that you've read how to manage your stress, the only thing left is to do it! Don't let yourself get too stressed out; it's bad for your life and your health. Apply these easy tips whenever you feel like you need a break from stress and soon, you'll be feeling better.
