No sample wedding speech can be suitable for every occasion. Circumstances alter radically from one social group to another and the person speaking needs to speak to a particular audience under particular circumstances. Nevertheless there are some universal principles that might be thought to apply across many times and cultures.
This sample contains only the three essential ingredients of a wedding speech. Thanks, a statement of intent and acknowledgments. These elements have always been important and probably always will be. In reality the speech would be longer and more witty
Friends, family and welcome guests, thank you for coming to our wedding. It is a very special day for us and we are delighted that you can all be here to share it with us. As most of you know we have been living together for ten years now with our two children and so some of you might wonder why we have taken so long to organize a wedding ceremony.
Our commitment to each other has not wavered over the past decade. Our children have cemented our relationship and we have no reason to marry other than to make a full, public and legally binding statement of our spiritual union.
From to-day Jean and I are no longer partners, but husband and wife. These are words that signify something a little different to us. We willingly renounce our independence now that we are two legs joined at the hip. That is what we we want. We can pursue our separate ways but if we wish to run forwards without stumbling we have to work together, not as partners but as limbs of the same body, which is our family.
And an important part of our celebration is thanks to all who have supported us down the years and to this point. In particular we thank our parents who have been so supportive and are particularly happy to see us conform at last. And finally, to our special guest, to Grandma, who is so happy to see the family . Extended formally. Grandma, enjoy the celebration and may it remind you that things never change completely.
