The Wide Appeal Of Gothic Horror

By Shawn Houston

Today, Gothic horror is an incredibly popular genre. There are many books and movies for fans to enjoy. Dark fantasy and intrigue are capable of keeping audiences in suspense with mounting amusement. These intense chills and thrills are what audiences return time and again to experience.

Not to be confused with horror in general, the injection of romance or at least romantic notions was contributed by the writers of the romantic period. They identified the genre as a natural extension of literary enjoyment. The enjoyable mix of mystery and suspense is designed to captivate audiences.

Experienced as a combination of fear and growing excitement, the formula is not surprisingly enjoyed by many. The form draws on elements of both melodrama and parody. Horrifying scenes are often juxtaposed against humor.

This juxtaposition provides the perfect place for exploring the sensational and the dramatic. The Stories being created are often both fascinating and bizarre. Dark issues, such as breaking social taboos may be explored.

The scope for imaginative thought here is wide and varied. Classically, the twisted tales may include references to: ghosts, magic, vampires, or demons. More traditional mythical creatures such as: dragons or griffins, elves, or fairies often appear. The anti-hero is often an extreme character, driven by a maniacal obsession for glory, power or human experience.

Most people will be familiar with a typical story opening. The following is an example which is possibly a cliche. Against the backdrop of a night sky, an old castle looms in the half-light. The only light comes from one flickering torch and the full moon. The eerie silence is broken by a piercing scream which resounds from the dungeon beneath.

Gothic horror is indeed capable of all this as well as a sufficient amount of dry wit. Stories offer a mixture of excitement and terror with a heavy dose of suspense and mystery. This is highly compelling yet horrifying at the same time. Gothic Horror
