Choosing A Good Breeder For Heritage Poultry

By Liz Lamb

Because of the increasing demand of people for fowl meat and the growing interest of breeders to make fat money from the business, the practices for breeding fowl have greatly suffered. In fact, it is now difficult to find heritage poultry due to many advancements in massive breeding technologies and methods.

Some authorities are absolutely against modern breeding practices that focus more on quantity than quality. These are the practices that can somehow bring our fowl to extinction. For this reason, authorities are struggling to give us more awareness regarding the two types of heritage fowl.

The first group is known as the foundational breeds. These fowl members are the parent or origin stocks of all fowl that exist in the world today. They are irreplaceable and cannot be revived after they had been extinct. Some of these breeds include the Houdan, the Redcap and the Brahma.

The other category, the composite breeds, are the chicken groups that resulted from interbreeding 19th and 20th century fowl during worldwide fowl trade. These are the fowl groups that are threatened by technology, because their original breeding routine is followed only by a few.

If you would like to consider quality, composite breed chicken definitely produce higher quality meat and eggs. And since they are all natural, they are not likely to give diseases to people. However, because breeding composite fowl the natural way takes time, only a few breeders are currently selling them.

Indeed, only a few natural fowl breeders now exist. But they can guarantee you premium products that will be worth your money. You just have to understand that their products may be more expensive, considering the standards that they are following.

Authorities do encourage breeders to buy and propagate heritage poultry instead of employing technology for massive production of substandard poultry products. This should be very beneficial both for the consumers and the entire world.
