How to Prepare For the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Part 1

By Scott Winy

As the primary test dates for the California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE) approach rapidly, students all across the state are busy preparing to take the test that will determine whether or not they receive a high school diploma. In this article we will provide these students with several tips that will help not only help them write a solid CAHSEE essay but also improve their writing as a whole. For those who may be unfamiliar with the structure of the CAHSEE, it consists of two sections, Math and English, and each section must be passed individually. Part of the English section is a free response essay that tests California Content Standards for tenth grade writing. Here are some ways that students can improve their performance on this portion of the exam.

One of the best ways that students can improve their CAHSEE writing is to develop a persona essay template. Now this template will consist of a generic introductory paragraph that can be adapted for any topic.

The sheer magnitude of topics covered by the CAHSEE makes it difficult to determine what sections should take priority over others. The easiest way to create an effective strategy is by taking a few practice exams before you begin your actual test preparation. Once you examine the overall scores from these practice tests, you will be able to get a fairly accurate picture of what sections you have strengths in and which ones are areas that need improvement. Focus on your weakest areas first, spending enough time on each content strand until you feel you have mastered the material before moving onto the next section of studies.

Take Your Studies Seriously -Regardless of how many strengths or weakness you have, if you plan to do well on the exam you need to take your studies seriously.

It is not enough for students to simply practice on their own, they should seek out the assistance of current or former teachers. Having a teacher review practice essays is a great way to ensure that students are on the right track. Teachers can often catch glaring grammatical errors and this will help the student improve their template and in doing so will help increase their chances of performing well on the exam.

2. Study one content area at a time. Students should focus on mastering one content strand at a time. Doing so enables them to master one area and gain confidence in this area. This will help them approach the exam overall with more confidence.3. Take a CAHSEE preparation course. Many high schools offer courses that are specifically designed to help students pass the CAHSEE. There are also private companies that offer excellent preparation programs with targeted video lessons and extensive one-on-one assistance.
