Is a Frat Right for You?

By Chester Bradley

One of the biggest parts of college living is deciding whether or not you want to join a fraternity or sorority. There can be advantages and disadvantages to both, here are a few.

If you are new to campus or don't know anybody then Greek life can provide a great way for you to make friends. Many remain friends long after college. Another advantage of the system is that when you graduate you have a large group of people to network with for job hunting. Fraternities and sororities also emphasize civil service and community involvement.

Let's be honest here though, the Greek system is mainly known for their drinking and partying (see disadvantages as well). The Greek system is also great for meeting people of the opposite sex. They are famous for their mixers, parties and Spring Break getaways. Lastly, you can get a lot of free shirts for joining one.

Disadvantages - One, you have to pay dues to the fraternity or sorority you join. Some of them are cheaper than others but in addition to college costs, it can be pricey. Another disadvantage is that you have to go through hazing when you are initiated. There have been horrible stories of hazing that goes too far and people being injured or hospitalized. They are also notorious for drinking and having crazy parties, then again this could fall into the advantage category if that is your thing.

However, people often say that joining the Greek system is the equivalent of buying your friends. You will probably be stereotyped and People who are independent, free spirited or artistic tend to avoid joining them and often even look down on them. Then again, if you don't want to deal with the whole issue you can always attend an accredited online college.
