Relive The Retro Fashion With Colorful Hippie Headbands

By Matthew M. Earnshaw

1960's and 70's witnessed the sudden rise of hippie culture among distinctive nations in the world. Hippie subculture was thought to originate as a youth movement in United states having said that it soon spread to other nations and was prevalent up till 1990. Even at this time, style business continues to embrace retro style via hippie oriented clothes and accessories. Speaking about accessories, hippie headbands are prominent symbols of this wild and bizarre culture.

Initially hippie headbands were crafted using leather however with time, plethora of materials including neckties, denims and synthetic fibers were started being used. These headwear were common to both males and females and were coupled with jeans, tie dyed outfits, bell bottoms, peasant skirts, blouses and dashikis. Denim and cotton were prominent materials for stitching clothes. While men kept beard and long hair, women discarded bras and makeup. Both the genders went barefoot to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Thus, a wild and unique atmosphere was created, all thanks to these fashionable stuff.

In case you wish to relive the retro look of 1960, you can design leather bracelets and hippie headbands for yourself. All you need is spare time, selected materials and low investments to accomplish this process. Additionally, you have to select your favorite fabric and color for designing these head straps.

- Lay your fabric down on a flat surface (you must use denim or leather given that they are sweat resistant and resilient). Using a sharp razor knife or scissor, cut 3 strips (30 inches in length and 1/8inch wide). Take accurate measurements using a measuring tape.

- Measure a length of 8 inches from one end of each of the 3 strips and mark it. Place them over one a further and either stitch them or pin them up on one end.

- Start braiding them from the joint end. Make sure you measure 8inches from the open ends as well so that you can stop braiding when you reach the desired length. Once you complete the braid, pin them together on the closed end.

- Tie a knot at the ends. You can also design beaded hippie headbands by adding beads to elastic threads and braiding them with simple strips. You can use hooks or button systems to secure them.

Some fashion designers use crochets of multicolored woods to add a contemporary touch. Crocheting makes them appear impressive and let the user make these bands long or short, as per their requirements.

How To Put Them Up:

Wash your hair with mild shampoo and let them dry. Straighten them up using a hairspray or straightening gel and remove wavy portions. Brush it away from your head and put your hippie headbands on. You can add bobby pins to keep it in place. Sometimes users use multiple headbands of short lengths to create a wilder look. Nevertheless don't use more than 3-4 or it will appear odd.
