What's this Speed Dating that I've Heard Of?

By Nicholas Lancaster

In a popular musical, Yenta was a matchmaker. She matched up women and men in Russia who would eventually marry. But life is not so simple today. People are no longer looking for mates. They are looking for dreams, and those are impossible to find.

The town matchmaker has since faded away with the horse and wagon, but a new generation of mating game has taken its place. In our world of virtual, fast-paced everything, meeting one guy at a time is too slow. Email has taken over love letters. Breakups are announced on facebook before the ex even knows. Speed dating has taken over the old matchmaker. The twenty first century has made meeting people into an obstacle course. It is not an intimate conversation, but a parlor game to a timer. Singles are flocking to speed dating, if they are extroverted. History of Speed Dating

The term "SpeedDating" was used from a Jewish organization. They are given credit for beginning this. It began as a way for single Jews to meet people of their faith.

Speed dating became a secular event in the late 1990's. It was first held at a restaurant in Southern California. It quickly spread east. Proponents of the events believe that this is a fast and easy way to meet a lot of people in a short period of time. For those who have busy lives, speed dating fits in perfectly.

How Speed Dating Works

Speed dating is held at local restaurants, hotels, or bars. The events are planned in advance although attendees can often join the event without pre-registering. Check the local speed dating planners so you'll know the rules. They'll vary slightly.

Usually all of one sex will be stationed at a seat. The opposite sex walks table to table. A timer will be set and the hopefuls will take a seat. Then the fun begins. You have anywhere from one to five minutes to engage the person across the table in meaningful conversation. Typically, the more people there are at the event, the shorter time to give everyone a chance to meet. Although one minute sounds like an impossibly short period of time, studies have shown that people make up their minds almost immediately as to whether they have met their future spouse.
