Admit it, you lead a busy life that seems to get busier with each passing day. Everybody, from college students juggling after-school jobs with their books, to your average high-powered executive, is so wound up these days and seemingly too preoccupied to get that much-needed R&R. That said, rest and relaxation is one thing you certainly will need. In fact, getting enough rest is imperative to living a healthy lifestyle and when you do not relax and get enough sleep you are putting yourself at risk for illness as well as other side effects.
Not Getting Enough Rest - What's In It For You
Believe it or not, the body needs enough rest each night to function properly. The amount of rest each individual needs every night differs, however the average adult needs approximately 7-8 hours of sleep each night to restore their body with the energy it needs to handle all of the demands of living each day. It is a sad reality, though, that many individuals do not see things that way, preferring to sleep for a shorter time than they should in order to cram more activities into their schedule. With the body lacking sleep, the immune system weakens and the body becomes an open playground for viruses and germs to frolic in, leading to diseases, or at the very least, a general feeling of fatigue and/or malaise. Nobody likes taking unplanned time off from work, what with today's demanding lifestyle, but this is inevitable if you should fall ill as a direct or indirect result of lacking sleep. But if you get enough rest, this allows your body to run like an engine with all cylinders firing, as your immune system wards off these nasty diseases with equal ease and authority.
Also, when you don't get enough rest you have difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly, and even remembering things. Though this may not be particularly evident when you first notice it, if at all, that wouldn't necessarily be the case if you continue to cut back on the hours of sleep that you get - can't blame the busy schedule for that one.
On top of all this, not getting enough rest and relaxation could stick a fork in your mood big-time. Our friends in the science and research department know for a fact that people who do not get enough sleep every night are the people who are most likely to follow in the footsteps of Oscar the Grouch in terms of disposition. You don't want to be notorious among your circle of friends, or especially your family, as that person who snarls "what's so good about the morning" when greeted with a cheerful "good morning!" to start the day.
So if you're all ready to pull an all-nighter to finish some stuff at work or a school project (maybe your kids' or perhaps your own) or paint the town red with your buddies, hold your horses. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, true indeed, but if you do not get enough rest on a regular basis, that will definitely not make you any stronger.
