Attributes Of A Charismatic Leader

By Randy Tennery

Leadership involves an enormous amount of broad based skills, attributes, and abilities. Though the various leaders have different traits, all the great leaders share something in common: they tend to be charismatic individuals. Unless a leader has a fair amount of charisma, he or she will find it incredibly tough to lead effectively. The qualities of a charismatic leader are hard to overlook. If you want to be a great leader, it's important that you are able to recognize the characteristics that make a leader charismatic. When you do this, you can start developing those same attributes.

Appearance is the first sign of a charismatic leader. Does the person fit the part of a leader? If no, that individual is not one that others will want to follow. Well-dressed, well-groomed, and looking healthy all round -- this is how a charismatic leader should look to people. Note, however, that this does not mean you should don the priciest clothes you can buy daily or that you have to be so fit. You simply need to look presentable and in such a way that promotes a presence of leadership qualities.

Being an effective speaker is one other trait of all charismatic leaders. Charisma is about drawing people, and the ability to speak in a clear, concise, and articulate way certainly helps with appealing to them. It is a must for leaders to have exceptional speaking abilities. You should be able to communicate your directives to your followers in a way that they can fully grasp. That enables people to effectively follow your lead. A side point must be raised here. Giving directives to individuals does not imply barking instructions or demanding them to do what you want. This is hardly a charismatic means for a leader to deal with his or her followers.

Speaking skills go together with listening skills and if there was any attribute that can be regarded as an attractive one in the eyes of others, it would be attentive listening. Far too many folks are self-absorbed to the point their conversational abilities are one-sided. They neglect to give other people the chance to voice out their views. Individuals who do offer such opportunity to other individuals exhibit they care which, in turn, makes others more trusting of the person. If your people believe in you, you have people who are happy to see that your directives are followed. And no, it's not possible to fake your way through this. Either you cultivate excellent listening skills or you don't. It's actually easy for individuals to see if you're just faking it.

One thing you can say about charismatic leaders is that they are almost without exception optimistic folks. Their optimistic outlook can be seen in how they communicate and act around people. Charismatic leaders, for their positive outlook on life, are usually motivational individuals. They have the ability to encourage the people around them into action.

As you can tell, there's no magic or hidden secret to developing the characteristics of a charismatic leader. These traits are actually founded in fundamental common sense. Try implementing these qualities in your daily life and you'll be well on your way to becoming a charismatic leader.
