Is Registered Dental Assistant Much Different From a Certified Dental Assistant?

By Scott Winy

The dental assistant training involved in becoming a registered dental assistant (RDA) is basically the same as becoming a certified dental assistant (CDA). The same skills are taught but some states require a dental technician to be registered. However, there are some differences between the two. Which one is right for you will depend on your state requirements and your personal choice.

What is a registered vs certified dental technician? A registered dental assistant, is a dental technician that graduated from an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited dental assisting program. An RDA is also required to pass a written and clinical exam. The exam is quite comprehensive and the clinical portion of the exam is sometimes supervised through the state dental board. A certified dental technician is only required to attend and pass a dental assisting program. They may choose to take an exam, but they are not required to in order to receive their certification. A few states require that all dental assistants be registered.

If you decide to get formal training, you will find that there are many schools that offer certificate or diploma courses. You can search the internet for information about the different schools and their curriculum. Some schools offer clinical practice aside from classroom lectures and laboratory work. Find a program that suits your schedule especially if you are working part-time.

To become a certified dental technician, you must find a dental assisting program that grants a certificate after completion of the course.

The orthodontic assistant test has 210 multiple choice questions that cover the course of the program. The practice management administrator test focuses more on the front office than it does on the healthcare. It will deal with book keeping, records, accounting and receptionist duties. The training for this program will cover computer classes as well as some of the typical anatomy and physiology classes.

Do not let intimidation stop you from taking the dental assistant certification test. There are some things you can do to help the test go much smoother. Make sure you do not try to cram the material in at the last moment. Cramming for an important exam is never a good idea!Start studying a few weeks beforehand, and plan to cover a certain amount of information each night. Don't forget to review. Get plenty of sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast in the morning and wear comfortable clothing. Simple things such as these can help.
