Panic Attacks And Phobias - Tips On How To Manage Them

By Jocelyn Kinder

It can sometimes be difficult to overcome your phobias. To manage your particular phobia, one of the ways is to find out what your fear is exactly. You can try talking to a professional who can help you figure out what the fear may be if you are having trouble finding out what it is exactly. Finding the ways that you can deal with that fear is the next step once you already know what the fear is.

For example, to manage your fear, one of the ways is to challenge your negative thinking with realistic thinking and positive statements. When you are having thoughts that make you anxious or fearful, ask yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense in order to challenge those thoughts. For instance, you may be afraid that not getting that job promotion could probably result to you being stuck at your job forever. It may seem depressing but your thinking in this situation is unrealistic. All kinds of jobs are available and even though you don't get this job this promotion it doesn't mean that you will never get one. Keep in mind that people change jobs all the time and you can always go elsewhere if ever you are unhappy at your present location. Changing your thinking can help you manage your fears.

Being nervous is sometimes a possibility when we are doing a certain task that may be scary. When this happens, what you can do is visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. An example would be you and your team playing in the championship hockey game in the next few days in front of a large group of people. Before the big day, try to imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that your playing in front of a large audience. You will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes if you play the game in your mind. Self Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation.

Divide the task into a series of smaller steps when you are facing a current upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety and then one at a time, you can complete the smaller tasks. If you complete these smaller tasks, the stress will then be more manageable and your chances of success will increase.

Of course, you must keep in mind that it is not easy to overcome our phobias. Also, because of our fears and worries, there are times when the problem could become worse. Try to take things in stride and don't focus too much on the problem. You will be able to find ways on how to overcome your phobia. If you have trouble, talk to a professional who can give you additional insights on your situation.
