Planning Wedding

By Donn Garra

Today's weddings are often incredibly costly. Thanks to television shows and celebrity culture, many brides feel that their big day has to be as extravagant as possible. This obsession with having the perfect day has turned weddings into a major industry. Don't worry, however, if your budget does not allow for a wedding that runs tens of thousands of dollars. You can use a number of techniques to reduce the expense of your wedding day and have a lovely event on a small budget. Below, you will find a selection of these tips.

Before you book anything or truly begin planning, you and your partner must figure out your exact budget. This will help ensure that you do not spend too much money when you actually start booking vendors. You should also, together, create a list of your priorities for the day. This can help you decide which parts of the day you want to spend the most money on. For example, if your cake and photography are most important to you, you should allocate larger portions of your budget to these areas.

For many brides, the wedding gown is one of the most important parts of her big day. It is important, though, to put the cost of a wedding gown into perspective. If you are attempting to host your wedding on a tight budget, it is illogical to spend thousands of dollars to purchase a dress you will wear just one time. Rather, you should opt to look for your gown at a discount bridal retailer or on a website that allows brides to sell their gowns when their weddings are over. If you want to find your dream gown for much less than its retail price, try utilizing either of these choices.

The Expense of the Reception

Generally, couples spend the largest part of their wedding budgets on reception expenses. One way you can cut costs is to hold the reception at the same location as your ceremony. This means that you will only need to pay for one space. If you simply cannot do this for whatever reason, consider the possibility of having your reception in the backyard of a friend or family member or in some other free venue.

You can also save a huge amount of money on your reception by holding your wedding in-between meals. If you are not having your reception during a conventional mealtime, you won't need to worry about providing a full, catered meal. Instead, you can have a dessert reception or offer light hors d'oeuvres. Either of these are much less expensive than paying for a complete meal.

Photos

Photography is one area in which many couples choose to splurge. This is because photos will remain long after the day is over. However, there are still ways to save money on this aspect of your wedding. One way to do this is to hire your professional photographer for just a few hours. This way, he or she can capture you getting ready, the ceremony, formal portraits, and the beginning of the reception. All of the major events will be captured and you will save money.
