Top Memory Training Tips You Should be Aware of

By Ashley Micheals

Your ability to remember information, such as numbers, dates and names, can be improved by several tips, which can effectively train your memory. The way you use your mind every day affects your memory, and so does your diet and how much exercise you get. Your memory can get better through using it, just as your muscles get stronger when you exercise them.

An obvious but often overlooked way to remember a fact, name or number is to repeat it until it's ingrained in your mind. Up until about fifty years ago, repetition was one of the cornerstones of education, and children largely learned by repeating things. By contrast, both kids and adults today have come to depend on technology to store data and information, so our memories aren't used very often. When you want to remember something, one of the best practices is to repeat it often, either in your mind, out loud or on paper. When you meet someone new, for example, say something like, "John, nice to meet you," and then repeat the name to yourself to let it sink in. For more complicated information, flash cards can be useful. You don't have to spend hours looking at them, but by consistently exposing yourself to something, you're far more likely to remember it.

Doing chunking can actually help you improve your memory rapidly. Basically, you take long strings of information, and make them into more manageable bite-sized pieces. If you have a Social Security number, or a phone number, this is the method used in remembering these number sequences. You reduce the long number into several groups of three or four numbers, and your mind can more easily retain this. By separating a grocery list into categories, you can remember what you need to get much more easily. You would go into the store and get your veggies first. Then you might get coffee, bread, and then other items on the list.

If you want your memory to work well, your brain has to get sufficient oxygen. If you want to strengthen your memory, then, one way to do it is to make sure you're getting regular exercise. Any type of exercise is beneficial in this way, but particularly the aerobic kind. People often feel better emotionally and mentally after exercising. This is not an illusion, as your brain is actually taking in more oxygen and operating at a higher level. You don't have to become a fitness fanatic, but it's essential to get some exercise regularly.

There are many options to choose from in regard to finding ways to improve your memory starting today. You can take supplements, exercise more, learn new skills or learn some memory enhancing strategies taught by various books and courses. In essence, try multiple options simultaneously in order to get the best results. Start improving your memory today!
