Attend Bartender School And Find A New Job

By Mari Orr

People who want to find a job making and serving cocktails in a restaurant, nightclub or bar can consider attending a local bartender school. Certification takes just a couple of weeks and prepares anyone to find a part time or full time position anywhere that has a liquor license. Tending bar is a convenient way to earn extra money while studying at college or to supplement a primary income source.

Most classrooms are set up like a bar with all the necessary tools. Trained instructors demonstrate techniques for mixing different types of cocktails. After the demonstrations, students get hands-on experience practicing what they learned.

The instructors teach students how to use beverage guns, blenders and cocktail shakers to create cocktails. Additional demonstrations include preparing garnishes, setting up a bar and stocking glassware. Classes will also address issues associated with responsible liquor service and students learn how to cope with customers who are drinking alcohol.

Most established schools invite potential students to observe a class and tour the facility before signing up for classes. This is the best way to evaluate the instructors and course material. Speaking to students after class will provide more good information about the school

Bartenders rarely work regular business owners and most will work night shifts. Many upscale nightclubs in major cities do not even open until after 10 pm and, in some locations, are open all night. The ideal job candidate has exceptional customer service skills, enjoys talking to people and can work efficiently in a busy environment.

Many schools maintain job databases to assist students with job placement. Certification requirements vary according to state. Many states do not have a certificate requirement for people tending bar but most employers give preference to job applicants who have one. Attending bartender school is the first step to a fun and lucrative career.
