By Robby Keese

No other item on your budgeting list can be considered more controllable other than the one that's set for your food expenses. You can easily reduce it significantly allowing you to save more money that can be used on other purposes.

A good way to start is to reduce the number of times you and your family eat out in a month. Completely eliminating it may infuriate the family. The best thing to do is to plan it well so that it can be more like a special occasion. Even if you just take them out twice a month your family would still remain very much contended if you exert an effort to make it a quality time for the family. Expenses for these eat outs can also be further reduced by making use of coupons which are typically offered by certain restaurants.

Another way that you can cut down your food expenses is to limit your purchase of convenient food. If you make or cook them yourselves you will certainly save a lot. We are often too accustomed to them that we disregard the fact that we could actually have them made your self.

There are a lot of alternative recipes you could find from freshly baked goodies to delectable salads and desserts. It may take a couple of your time but even if you have to spend in order to have the cooking done it would still save you a significant amount of money.

Keeping Tabs on sales or discounts happening around can also make the job of slimming down your food budget a lot easier. For instance, as soon as you find one you can then start planning your menus with whatever items or ingredients are included on that sale. Planning these things ahead can go a long way in trimming your food expenses down.

One of the expensive ingredients on typical menus today is the meat. Thus it would only make sense that if you ease down on the meat a little bit and have meatless menus at least twice a week; you could come up with significant amount in savings as well. They measure is also pretty much good for you as you can substitute meat with vegetable goodies in stir-fry casseroles.

Now a lot of foods like pizzas, bread and pastries come in package mixes. It's not a good idea to make use of them though because they are certainly more expensive compared to making one of your own.

For the last tip and as mentioned earlier, Coupons are a great way to shave off a couple of dollars from your food budget. So why not take advantage of them. Most newspapers out there are known to be excellent sources for coupons along with a couple of cooking or recipe magazines. Most coupons are relatively small though so you'll have to keep your eyes open when checking every page.
