Meet Former NFL Player Matt Dodge

By Eunice Pugh

Matt Dodge played for the New York Giants in the 2010 season which must have been tough on him. He was born in May nineteen eighty seven in North California. He joined the Giants as a punter.

It was at West Carteret High that the player started playing football before joining Appalachian State University. He later transferred to East Carolina's Pirates in 2007 where he held the record of been the second player in the school's history to hold 80 punts and more in a single season. In June of 2010 he was signed in as a rookie by the New York Giants in 7th round of NFL drafting.

Drafting took place when Jeff Feagles, long time giants punter, was retired. He was chosen over J. Y. Bond who was seen as another favorite candidate. Dodge signed a four year contract and was with the team when it lost to Philadelphia Eagles 38-31, where he is critiqued for not taking the ball out of play.

The Giants released him in 2011 when he could not beat Giants member from the Jets, Steve Weatherford. The Jets were later to invite him to a few workout sessions after their own T. J. Conley, according to Jets special team coordinator Mike Westhoff, was performing below per. Conley was later signed after showing improvement and Matt became a free agent to today.

He is acknowledged for having brought fresh competition into football and is said to be a willing player who can win games for whichever side he is playing on. Some team officials also accept that he has a strong leg and should perform well in NFL. Problem identified with his style is that he needs a coach who will be by his side to guide him.

Though having had turbulent times since his rookie years Matt Dodge has shown commitment to the game. Lake Tahoe has a soft spot for his photographs and flair. His letting go from the Giants was a shock to many fans as well as fellow players.
