Working with foreign clients

By Carl Hudgens

If you are self employed or running a small business, you may often come across clients who are just learning to speak English, or even those who speak very little. They may seek you out because you are small, and they feel intimidate by a larger business.

If you are a small business or self employed, you can use this to seek out client and offer yourself as a friendly, personal, understanding place to come.

It can be incredibly daunting to be living in a new country where you must learn the language. We English speakers seldom experience this due to the fact that so many people learn our language. When we visit other countries, we are more than likely to run into people who speak our language, and even more people who want to speak out language and are looking to practice.

Showing sensitivity and not getting frustrated or leaving the impression that you think your client is stupid will go a long way. Depending on the sort of work you do, sometimes, language is not even needed so much. Many times actions do not need a translation. If you are providing services such as beauty treatments or massage, you may get away with not having to do much in the way of speaking. Other businesses that involve agreements, contracts, or a situation where important information is exchanged, may require a bit more.

When it comes to the really important matters, like documents that need signing, or information you want your client to have that is crucial to the services or treatment, then it may be wise to call in the services of an expert translator. Someone who speaks in the mother tongue, and can really help translate the full meaning of what you need your client to know, not just the words. It can be a much more reliable method than simply hitting a translate button the computer.
