All There Is To Know About Largemouth Bass

By Laura Gallagher

The largemouth bass which lives in freshwater is a member of the sunfish group. It was given the name because it has a huge mouth and this feature makes it easy to distinguish from other types of fish. It is native to the waters of North America and holds the title of 'State Fish' in five states.

The Largemouth, Latin name of Micropterus Salmoides, is olive green in color and has toothed horizontal stripes on either flank made up of dark or even black blotching. Weighing records have found it to exceed 11Kg and it can measure at almost 30 inches. Left unharmed it can live up to 20 years.

A top predator in the waters, these fish will eat invertebrates such as crayfish and other fish, even those from their own group. The fry (young fish) feed initially on larvae of insects and zooplankton. When they reach only 2 inches in size they are aggressive predators.

The sport of angling rates these fish as one of their favorites. This breed is well known for fighting against capture, making it an exciting challenge for any fisherman. It is known to leap out of the water to try and dislodge the hook.

Conservationists and those anglers who care about future stocks are encouraging the release of the fish following capture. Most of the largest fish are females, and buy replacing them in the lake or river is ensuring there will be stock for future years. Luckily this species seems to cope with being caught and then released without harm.

Largemouth Bass like slow-moving clear water to live in, with rocky ledges and vegetation for cover. In Texas, a second variety, M. S. Floridanus, has been introduced and there the enthusiasm for the sport with many fishing clubs and a market for fish meat has boosted economy in that state. The biggest threat to the breed is over fishing by man and pollution as well as drought.
