How Young Musicians Benefit From Attending Rock Band Camp

By Laura Gallagher

Rock band camp offers young people the ideal way to learn what being part of a musical group is all about. Programs vary but most offer enrollment to children between the ages of approximately 7 and 17. Some offer instruction during the day only while others are full immersion experiences with overnight accommodations for campers.

Camps are open to young musicians regardless of how much experience they have. Kids can sing or play keyboards, bass, guitar or drums depending on their interest. Qualified instructors assign campers to groups based on skill level and how long they have been playing their chosen instrument and whether they have ever played as part of an ensemble.

Many young musicians have never played along with other instruments. Practicing solo at home or playing along to recorded music is not the same as collaborating with live musicians. Campers learn about stage presence and develop techniques for playing to a live audience.

Instructors are nearly always professional musicians who have performed and recorded music with established bands. They will spend time with the students working on instrument specific techniques that help them improve playing skills. Students also receive instruction on how to set up and operate monitors, microphones and amplifiers for a live performance.

Campers get the opportunity to play on a real stage. Most camps organize a concert featuring all the bands giving all the rockers a chance to perform for family and friends after they have had time to polish their act. Many camp organizers record the concert and give campers a DVD of the performance to take home with them.

Kids who attend rock band camp learn life skills in addition to honing their musical ability. They learn the importance of teamwork and gain confidence when performing onstage. Many will take that knowledge, start their own band and follow their dream of becoming a star.
