The Telling Grammar Of I Want My Girlfriend Back

By Cutts Mattadear

I want my girlfriend back' reveals attitudes through the selection and placement of words. The personal pronoun at the beginning of the sentence is a sign that the self is placed first in the mind of the speaker. Also, using the possessive pronoun, 'my' is telling signal of possessiveness.

Many mothers teach their young children a jingle which runs, 'I want doesn't get'. This serves to discourage the selfishness that is natural in young children but has to be outgrown quickly if the infant is to develop into a mature individual. A mature person does not normally go around bleating, 'I want'.

When it comes to the point of relationships between young adults a boy may initially seem attractive. He may have a cheerful personality and healthy body but girls mostly know that these are only superficial traits, and that real worth lies beneath the surface, like gold.

Also beneath the surface may lie certain characteristic and traits that are undesirable, like rocks beneath the surface of the sea. Most dangerous and common of these is selfishness. A selfish person is immature because he has not developed the ability to relate to other people as ends in themselves. Instead he sees all other people from his own selfish perspective. This may not matter within the first few hours of a relationship but can be ruinous as time goes by.

Possessiveness is another unfortunate but common male trait that is like a large, flashing luminous warning sign to a girl. A possessive boy is possessive because he sees his girlfriend as something that he owns. In extreme cases jealousy may develop into a green eyed monster that leads to catastrophic consequences, as was the case when Othello smothered the girl he loved.

The sentence, 'I want my girlfriend back' indicates a possibility of possessiveness because of the possessive pronoun 'my'. Different words might have been used. If 'my' had been replaced by a name, a more promising attitude might have been revealed.
