Thy Will Be Done In Earth As It Is In Heaven

By Thelma Kent

Not long ago every child in a Christian influenced western world would have known that the words, in earth as it is in heaven' were an excerpt from the Lord's Prayer. Since the time of King James the words of the prayer were included in the way that the English language was learned. This all changed when officious clerics declared that the Bible should be 'translated' into modern English.

Statistics on this issue can hardly exist. However, it would seem to be a fair guess that very few six-year old children in the western world would recognize the Lord's Prayer now. They live in a world that is radically different from that of their grandparents.

After the Second World War faith declined and church attendances began to decline drastically. Christians who had based their education largely on the Lord's Prayer had dropped atom bombs in people in cities.

Reciting the Lord's Prayer did not to stop communist ideologues declaring that religion is a drug, and imposing bans on religion in countries as big as Russia and China. When this happened many Christians fell to wondering whether the plea that 'Thy will be done' had been falling on deaf ears for two thousand years.

The fact that 'reforms' have recently been proposed in Britain that primary school children should again be introduced to learning some poetry off by heart is a sure enough indication of what the state of education is. However, it may also be a sign that the tide has turned. The radical social changes of the last century are matched now by waves of technological change that are rooted in universal truths. Even the words used, like 'net', 'browse' and 'format' have the earthy, organic flavors of history.

This might indicate that a new world might incorporate many old things. The post war tendency to reject the past completely may have been reversed. In the new world now being ushered in children may once again enjoy the pleasure of reciting the words, 'in earth as it is in heaven'.
