The Best Way To Order Wine While On A Date

By Ilechukwu Magnus

You are now ready for that big date come this Friday night after making all the necessary arrangements; shopping luxe suit online, making reservations at the venue and even stopping for a hair trim. While you've never been to the restaurant before, you have heard it's the best of the best in your town.

You are now excited, right? And as far as you know, the date will be smooth sailing from the time you pick her up to the goodnight kiss at her door. While it seemed that you won't experience any hitch along the way, there is however the one part that nobody has advised you about; how to order a bottle of wine during the date.

Do you know the right step to take when your server brings a bottle of wine to your door step? If you are given a wine list, can you confidently select the right vintage? Most men will hold 'No' as an answer to all of these. Don't lose a sleep over these though. Here are some guide that will help you to navigate the complicated task of getting a bottle of wine placed on your table.

Getting That Wine Placed On Your Table During A Date

That you just purchased a high quality suits during the last suits sale is but the introductory steps towards a successful date. The next step is to order a bottle of wine that will make your night smooth without looking like you don't know what you are doing.

Learn as much as you can about the restaurant's wine list beforehand, so you don't have to feel the pressure when you're on your date. You can get this information on the restaurant's website or by calling their hostess. If you've got some off peak hour in your hands, you can make a prior reservation to taste their wine. Also, you may need to inquire whether they even sell liquor at all. Your date will feel terribly sad if you can't provide her a nice glass of wine with dinner, especially if you have made the promise.

However, if you don't want to gamble on your chances of satisfying your date with the right wine from the restaurant, see if they will allow you to bring yours. Some restaurants will allow you to do this, as long as you don't bring a brand they sell and pay a corkage fee.

Hold yourself together when the server presents you with the wines list. Wine lists are difficult to read, but this isn't a life or death decision. Just ask your date what type of wine she would love to take. If she says she hates red wine, your list is narrowed down greatly. Otherwise, consider what you are eating. You can get a white wine if it is a fish dish. You can both do with a red wine if the dish is smothered in tomato sauces, salmon, poultry and meaty dishes. You can buy a sparkling wine or a white wine if the food is a spicy food or pastas.

Don't base your choice on price. While it is necessary that you choose a wine you can pay for, it shouldn't be the deciding factor. A bottle of wine that is moderately priced can be just as wonderful as a highly priced one. It is also important that you avoid the house wine. It is usually selected by the restaurant to make a profit and is typically of poor quality.

Presenting The Wine

Now that you have finally decided on the right wine to use, you are not yet done though. Your server will come to your table to give you the wine. For many men, this is the confusing part. However, this is the process that will prove that the wine is worth a drink. It is inappropriate to grab the bottle out of your server's hands. Follow these simple steps instead.

The first step to take after the server present you with the bottle of wine is to check the label. If that is the wine you ordered, nod your head and say "yes' in approval. If it isn't the right wine, there is no need to get upset. As humans, coupled with the noise in the restaurant, such mistakes are always possibilities.

When you have seen and approved the wine, allow the server to uncork it and either drop the cork on the table or hand it over to you. This is done so you can pick the cork up and look at it to make sure it isn't cracked and dry. It is necessary that the cork has a wet end which will prove that the wine is still good.

Next, the server will pour a bit of wine into your glass. Smell the wine first; it should have a sweet or fruity odour to it. If the odour you perceived is musty, mouldy or vinegary, then the wine may be bad. Once the wine is in your glass, take a sip despite the odour. If it doesn't taste good, let the server know. They will probably take it too to verify the bad taste and take it back for a change.

You should also tell the server if the wine tastes just fine. He will then fill up your date's glass and then refill yours so you can continue your date.

Black suits, reservations at a fancy restaurant and a great attitude are important in having a successful date but it is also necessary that you learn and know how to order the right bottle of wine during your date. We hope this short guide has enlightened you on how to order a perfect bottle of wine during your next date.
