The Social And Economic Values Of Fine Art Workshops

By Laura Gallagher

Fine art workshops are usually provided by practicing artists or organizations. Their purpose is to deliver a course for a particular group of people looking for instruction and development in their art. They may be a group of pensioners look for an outlet for their energy no longer needed at work, or a group of teenagers wishing to develop skills in a particular area such as watercolors or oils.

Some artists have been famously anti-social and some have trod a fine line between sanity and insanity. Art is a lonely occupation and a measure of subjectivity is essential. However, works must be sold to a public audience so artists do need some objective criticism for the sake of their personal development.

A working seminar or conference enables artists to benefit from teaching. The old dictum that those who can, do and those who cannot, teach need not discourage attendance. The truth in these words applies especially in this context. The ability to detect and encourage unique talents in students does not require artistic talent in a teacher.

To make a living out of one's own creative talents is difficult. Few people can manage it. An artist who does not sell enough work may be compelled to fall back on teaching which may be more lucrative than he expected. Students will pay willingly for instruction and additional revenue may be made from accommodation, commissions and sales.

Groups quickly acquire their own characters composed of the sum of personalities that make up the group. Being a member of a class that has a spirit of camaraderie can be a stimulating experience, especially if a time span is sufficiently short to prevent the development of those tensions that develop over time.

Online websites advertise a variety of fine art workshops around the globe. Some are held in interesting places that are well worth visiting in themselves. An interesting learning experience can complement other tourists activities such as sightseeing and dining. However, some people may be unable to afford such expensive experiences. They may nevertheless benefit from an inner city course which is much cheaper with many of the same benefits.
