Homeschooling; How It Helps Preserve Family Values At Home

By Mia Chicco

Talking to parents and children who receive their education at home can be an interesting exercise. While it's true that parents who choose to homeschool their children can be just as busy as public school teachers there are some differences. Parents have the benefit of a smaller work load because student numbers are significantly lower. Yet since this is an act of love by a parent towards their children it is different in a number of ways. A child who is considered "different" by peers can receive some very beneficial life-changing benefits from this type of education which is also true for any child. Public schools and other children can be brutally cruel to some children, as we all have read or experienced. Those in a homeschool setting have some very real and concrete benefits that do not include this cruel treatment which is beneficial to any child.

These days it appears as though many private and public schools are extremely overcrowded. The teacher student ratios are often above maximum capacity. The overall economy is a concern as well since it has an effect on the budgets that schools must operate within. So that is another reason for crowded classrooms and less individualized attention. Having their spiritual beliefs as part of the educational environment their children learn in is a desire of many parents. An educational environment such as this will not subject these children to areas of history that do not fall in line with their belief system.

Learning should include some independent work on the materials learned during a regular school day. There are a variety of reasons that children will ignore their "homework" as we know it these days. Obviously, this is different when the teacher is a parent. Young students may not agree with the fact that homework, when used properly, is a great idea. But the fact remains that the parent will know exactly how their children are performing when it comes to completing assignments. Even in a class taught within the home, it's still possible for students to have ample time to complete assignments during the day.

The field trips provided by schools, whether private, public or homeschools, are of course, loved by the children. For most kids however, these field trips are few and far between. Imagine what it would do for your children for you to take advantage of field trips to help educate them at home which depends of course on where you live. However, if you are reasonably close to a larger city, you could have access to museums. Science, biology and nature are subjects that can involve a field trip to just about anywhere including your backyard.

Another fantastic advantage to homeschooling your child is that they can receive the kind of education that includes their individual talents. The parents often are the best ones to identify a child's talents and know where their areas of special attention might be. This is of course not something you will find in any other school. Based on what their child needs, the parents are now able to create a workable curriculum for their child's education needs.
