By Tanya Krulic

If you want to work with children or already work in child care, the Certificate III in Children's services is the course for you.

This qualification is from the Community Services Training Package. It covers workers who use Organisational policies, procedures and individual children's profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes. Depending on the setting, workers may work under direct supervision or autonomously. In some settings, the worker may also have limited supervisory responsibilities of volunteers. Workers at this level are required to have an understanding of Indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.

Some of the subjects that you can expect to study include: Ensure children's health and safety; Interact effectively with children; Respond to illness, accidents and emergencies; to name but a few.

You will also have the opportunity to study some of the following electives: Participate effectively in the work environment; Work effectively with families to care for the child.

If you have successfully completed year 12 most providers will automatically consider you eligible to apply for this course. Often no minimum education is required. Police checks are mandatory.

Once you have completed the Certificate III in Children's Services you can become a Child Care Worker, Child Care Assistant or even a Family Day Care Worker and secure a yearly income over $34,000 per year.

As a Child Care Worker you will provide care & supervision for children in residential homes & non-residential childcare centres.

  1. Long care facilities are the most common. Operating from 7:30am - 6:00pm, children are segregated into aged groups and developmental stages. Most centres have a comprehensive education component for children.See more at:-certificate iii in child care
