Unlike Fruit Flies, Human Beings Know What Chemical Makes You Happy

By Laura Gallagher

It has been the wish of many people through the years to know what chemical makes you happy. Even some fairy stories tell of the wish for a magic elixir that induces everlasting happiness. The deep desire might be at the bottom of the drugs trade since people presumably take recreational drugs in search of joy.

There is of course an important distinction between drugs and chemicals. Drugs are often manufactured for specific reasons and contain chemical compounds that work in different ways upon the central nervous systems of users. They are taken for specific reasons, some to relieve pain and others to perhaps serve as a kind of recreation.

The well-known party drug called ecstasy is said to make any occasion happy by inducing the brain to release the chemicals nor-epinephrine dopamine and serotonin into the bloodstream. These create feelings of ecstasy without one even hearing that one has won a lottery. The drug is considered well worthwhile by many party goers, dangerous though it is.

Cannabis, or marijuana is another drug that gives an illusion of happiness. It is the powerful substance known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinal or THC within the flower of the cannabis plant that causes the euphoric state after a joint has been smoked. The impaired judgment and possibility of addiction are the price to be paid.

A substance that has been isolated and is often found around the gut of animals including human beings is serotonin, also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine. It is derived from another substance called tryptophan. The fact that it is found in largest concentrations around the gut may have something to do with the satisfaction derived from wining and dining but it is in brain chemistry that the effects originate.

It is possible that this substance is produced in the first instance by brain activity in the form of tiny electrical impulses. They may be generated by sensual intakes such as the smell of food or soft touches. It is not only human beings but also other life forms as low down as the fruit fly that can experience fulfillment as a result of serotonin intake. They may not know what chemicals make you happy but it appears that such knowledge is only of academic interest only.
