Air Pollution Is Affecting Cities Around The World

By Robert Adamson

The debate over global warming is polarizing not just the politics of the United States but the entire World. Many nations have admitted that people are having a negative impact on the planet that it is a major cause for concern. As a number of countries are taking steps to decrease their emissions, clean up their water and looking for new ways to improve the air they breathe, some countries are still refusing to take the necessary steps needed to keep their air clean and their people safe. The global science community has banded together to study the affects of air pollution on different countries populations. The tests were extensive and looked at many different types of air pollution.

The dangerous sulfur dioxide released by gas powered vehicles and machines was one of the most common types of pollution found. Particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide were also a concern in many countries. All of these pollutants have been linked to serious health problems and fatal diseases. The Countries who have joined the fight to clean up earth's air are using this data to put pressure on the countries that are slow to take action. Here are some of the findings in countries that have the world's worst air pollution.

New Delhi in India is a city located near the very top of the most polluted cities in the world. For every five people living in that city two of them have already reported a serious illness that is affecting their respiratory system. Particulate levels throughout the city have been reported that are six times higher than any scientist or doctor considers safe. Particulate pollution has been directly linked with several causes of lung cancer. The city's climate contributes to the dangerous levels of pollution. Dust can combine with dangerous chemicals to for a toxic breathing environment. Scientists have noted that those most at risk in New Delhi are those who spend most of their time out doors working near the city's dust covered roads.

The number on most polluted city on earth is in China. The government of China has imposed almost no regulations on factories, business, and car manufactures. This combined with the steadily increasing population has lead to a dangerous environment for the cities citizens. On many occasions the city of Beijing has sent warnings to schools to keep children indoors. Air filtration systems are being installed by anyone who can afford them. The city was the site of the 2008 Olympic Games. Since the games were televised the government of China executed a government cover up to make the city's air appear cleaner. During the games the government banned many drivers from operating vehicles to decrease the amount of pollution being released into the air while cameras were around.

Mexico City, Mexico also finds its self on the list of most polluted cities in the world. Ozone clouds oppress the city daily. The deadly levels of this dangerous smog exceed levels taken in any other country across the globe.
